If you are in need of a little picker upper first thing in the morning don't start with your usual cup of coffee. Instead, try this matcha smoothie that will give you that very much needed morning perk plus a ton of nutrients that are always appreciated that early in the day.
For a lot of us, coffee is a necessity to get the day going. But, as much as I love coffee I have to admit that it's not the best thing to be consumed on an empty stomach. It's too acidic and too harsh for your belly.
A while ago, I tried giving my delicious cup of warm java a break. And while it didn't last long, I like the taste of coffee so much! I did realise how my stomach was much happier when I started the day with something that was a bit easier on my belly.
Needless to say, other than the taste of coffee I was also missing the picker-upper effect. My belly was happy but I wasn't. I like to have that extra boost of energy and being very alert before I head out of the door. There are mornings where I can manage just fine without the help, but some others, oh, boy! not so much.
I started getting into matcha and found about all the incredible benefits it has so I was immediately hooked. It has a bit of a bitter taste and for some people might be too potent. That's why I much rather have a matcha smoothie than a match latte, which is what I was going for.
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder and as your typical cup of green tea, it's loaded with antioxidants and a wide range of health benefits. But matcha is like green tea on steroids, one cup of matcha is equivalent to drinking 10 cups of green tea in terms of nutrition.
So we are getting so much more than just caffeine and antioxidants. Here are a few of those benefits I'm talking about:
This matcha smoothie, as most of my other smoothie recipes is incredibly easy to make. You just put all the ingredients in the blender, give it a good spin and you are good to go. It will take you maybe 5 min if not less.
The ingredients will balance each other out nicely. And I included bananas and dates to add a bit of sweetness. This will dim down the taste of the matcha a little bit since it can be a bit potent.
Aside from that we also have spinach, mint, tahini and unflavoured protein powder. This matcha smoothie is an absolute powerhouse of nutrients. And it also has enough protein and nutrients that can serve as a post workout snack.
