This Chinese Fried Rice is hearty, tasty, and incredibly easy to make. We veganized the classic recipe so you can have the full-on restaurant experience in the comfort of your own home.
Chinese fried rice is one of my families favourite dishes. I usually make it as a side dish but they like it so much that sometimes it ends up as main. It has grains, veggies and protein, so it is easy to put it in a bowl and have it be lunch.
This recipe is incredibly easy to make and all the ingredients are probably in your kitchen already. I made it with a few staples, so I can quickly whip it together. This is a lifesaver when you are short on time or you can't make it to the market.
Brown rice, frozen veggies, and firm tofu are the main ingredients. And we need just a few spices and soy sauce to season it. These ingredients will give us that authentic Chinese fried rice experience we are after.
We are using brown rice to keep it on the healthier side. Brown rice has so many more health benefits compared to white rice. For this reason, I always prefer using this kind but we have to tweak things a bit since they are both different.
Brown rice needs a bit more water and more time to be fully cooked. Check the back of the package so you know exactly how much you will need for the brand that you are using.
Once the rice is fully cooked we need to get the frying part right. The key to making the perfect Chinese fried rice is to fry the rice until there's no more moisture. We need to crank up the heat and stir fry it quickly. If you can't get your stove to high heat, just leave the rice on the stove for a bit longer.
What we are looking for is to have the outside of the rice a little bit crispy while the inside feels a bit moist still. With this technique your Chinese fried rice won't dry up, you'll get the best of both worlds!
I'm all about fresh veggies but there's a place and time for frozen veggies too. This Chinese fried rice recipe is one of those. Since we wanted our recipe to be easy and practical pre-cut frozen veggies do the work just fine. I always keep a bag in the freezer. And it always helps me on those days I didn't plan my meals.
We are adding extra firm tofu to get some protein on our plates. For Chinese fried rice, I always recommend using the firm or even extra firm tofu. We want our tofu to stay as little square and these two kinds are the only ones that will be able to deal with all the tossing and turning happening on your frying pan.
